Description

This book is an historical sketch of progress in the understanding of and both utilization and prevention of electric breakdown. Both gaseous and solid-state devices are considered. Material and device dimensions range from kilometers, as in the atmosphere, to nanometers, as in semiconductor devices. Topics are selected to be significant and interesting. They include Benjamin Franklin's discoveries and interpretation of electric charge, his lightning rod, and the current-day understanding of lightning. A gas discharge lamp, utilizing electric breakdown in sodium vapor, and a thin-film electroluminescent display device, having phosphor and dielectric microns thick, are covered, both being light sources with which the author has had first-hand experience. Electric breakdown in the polymer insulator polyethyline, millimeters thick, and the oxide in metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistors (MOSFETs) nanometers thick, are described. The book concludes with simplified explanations of the particle-wave duality of electrons and photons, electron tunneling, and the nature of electric charge and forces inside the atom. The book is intended for all electrical engineers and physicists, students in these disciplines, and laypersons with an interest in physical science and an exposure to the physics of electricity.
